Equipment Financing for a Pavement Business: Options and What Lenders Ask For
Compare the equipment need, total written cost and seasonal cash before applying. A small monthly payment does not show the down payment, fees, collateral, final buyout or other obligations.

Before you start
- A justified exact equipment choice and delivered quote.
- A current business budget, debt list and seasonal cash forecast.
- The lender's document checklist and written offer/lease terms.
What you will finish with
- A local lender-document checklist without uploading private records.
- A matched quote and total-payment comparison.
- A repayment stress test with winter and late-receipt scenarios.
Source note: sources below were checked as of October 11, 2026. Product revisions, local rules and your written quotes control the actual job. Unknown costs stay blank.
Decide what you can afford before applying.
Start with the job and equipment decision, then preserve enough cash for operations. Loan approval does not prove that a purchase fits the season.
Equipment need versus a bigger loan
Compare the exact machine required for accepted work with upgrades. Keep additional capacity in a separate decision so an offered borrowing amount does not become the purchase budget.
Down payment, working capital and seasonal bills
Schedule upfront funds and all operating obligations against receipts. Equipment borrowing does not remove the need to pay materials, payroll, coverage and repairs.
A cash purchase, rental or staged purchase as alternatives
Use the same scope to compare cash, rental and staged purchases. Record what each option changes in delivery capacity, cash timing and support responsibility.
Compare financing options.
Obtain actual written terms from the lender or lessor and retain the date and borrower assumptions. This guide lists educational options, not NPMCA lending offers.
Bank/credit-union equipment term loan
Ask about eligible equipment, term, fixed/variable rate, fees, security and guarantees. Use the institution's current checklist rather than a generic approval promise.
Dealer/manufacturer financing and independent equipment lender
Compare the machine's cash price with the financed transaction and disclose incentives or restrictions. Check whether fees, insurance or a different purchase price offset a advertised payment.
Lease with actual end-of-term return/buyout terms
Record who owns the equipment, return condition, early termination, required insurance and final purchase/buyout obligation. Do not assume every lease has a directly comparable stated APR.
SBA-backed options through participating lenders
As of 2026-10-11, SBA states 7(a) can support eligible equipment and working capital; 504 addresses qualifying long-term equipment with at least 10 years of remaining useful life and excludes working capital/inventory; microloans through intermediaries can fund eligible machinery/equipment up to $50,000.
Separate working-capital credit from long-lived equipment funding
Identify which funds pay for the machine and which pay seasonal operations. Program eligibility and lender approval remain specific to the borrower, equipment and intended use.
Build the lender document pack.
Use the lender's actual request and a private secure delivery route. The guide stores only your checklist progress locally; do not enter SSNs, tax returns or bank statements here.
Ownership/entity/EIN and required identity checks
List the entity/ownership and identification documents the lender requests. Confirm the destination and keep the actual records outside the public worksheet.
Business plan, equipment quote and use of funds
Show the selected machine/configuration, delivered cost, why it is needed and what each borrowed dollar funds. Retain evidence of equivalent alternatives.
Business/personal credit and lender-requested tax returns
Ask whose credit and returns are required and obtain the specific years/formats from the lender. There is no universal credit-score or application-data requirement stated here.
Financial statements, bank statements, debts and forecast
Reconcile the requested financial records and existing debts with the cash forecast. Show actual assumptions and distinguish signed jobs from hoped-for work.
New-business owner experience, equity and signed-work evidence
Provide documented relevant experience, invested funds and accepted-work evidence where requested. These support a lender review without guaranteeing that a new company qualifies.
Understand security and the written obligations.
Read what happens during the contract, at the end and if work or payments fall behind; ask for clarification before signing.
Collateral and any personal guarantee
Identify assets pledged and who personally promises repayment. Have qualified advice on the actual guarantee/security terms; a business entity alone does not answer them.
Lien/security filings and insurance requirements
Ask what lender security filings and insurance are required and what release occurs after payoff. An equipment security interest is different from a construction-payment lien.
Used-machine age/condition and valuation
Check the lender's eligible age/condition, inspection, valuation and title requirements for the exact machine. Do not assume a used listing is financeable.
Approval is lender-specific
Get written approval conditions, expiry and what must be delivered before funds are released. An advertisement or educational program page is not your approval.
Compare the total cost, not just a payment.
No matched reader-specific offers were available, so interest-rate, fee, down-payment and lender-cost ranges are omitted. Enter only actual dated offers in the comparison.
Amount financed, rate, term and fees
For equal fixed monthly payments with a final balloon, payment = [P − B ÷ (1 + r)^n] × r ÷ [1 − (1 + r)^(-n)], where P is actual principal, B the final balloon, r the monthly rate and n payments. At zero rate use (P − B) ÷ n. Enter zero for B only when the written offer has no balloon. Check the lender's written schedule.
Required down payment, deposits, balloon or buyout
Add non-financed upfront cash, scheduled payments and final balloon/buyout to total cash paid. Count financed fees inside principal once; do not charge them again upfront.
Prepayment/default terms and variable-rate exposure
Record how early payoff, late payment, default and changing rates alter the schedule. The simple fixed-payment formula does not model an undisclosed lease or changing rate.
Taxes and accounting questions for a qualified adviser
Separate equipment price, financing charges and other costs in the record. Ask a qualified adviser how the actual transaction is recorded; this comparison determines no deduction or tax benefit.
Stress-test the repayment schedule.
Use the written payment dates in the canonical budget and cash plan.
Slow winter and late customer payments
Keep obligations unchanged while testing fewer jobs and delayed receipts. Flag the lowest balance and the action needed before cash runs out.
Repair/maintenance while payments continue
Include quoted service and a declared downtime scenario. Loan/lease payments do not automatically stop while the equipment is being repaired.
Confirm any seasonal-payment offer in writing
Use a changed seasonal payment schedule only if the lender's actual terms allow it, including fees or later larger payments. Do not infer a holiday from seasonal work.
Choose only after the equipment and cash comparisons are complete
Review machine fit, total cost, written obligations and cash together. Record the decision and unresolved conditions rather than treating the smallest payment as the winner.
Live member tax/legal help, with plan limits.
No qualifying live equipment-financing provider was found in the checked member catalog. Any eligible Business Tax Hotline or Small Business Legal Plan resource is help within its actual terms, not a lender or a promise of document review, tax treatment or approval. See the current plan limits beside the member links.
Assemble lender documents and compare written offers
Confirm equipment and alternatives
Save the exact delivered machine quote and the rent/cash/staged purchase comparison.
Obtain the lender checklist
Record requested documents and a verified private submission route without uploading them here.
Organize the document pack
Check entity/identity, plan/use of funds, requested credit/tax/financial and accepted-work evidence.
Record each written offer
Enter amount, rates/payment schedule, fees, security/guarantees and final obligations with date and source.
Compare total cash
Count upfront funds, all payments and balloon/buyout once and label financing charges separately.
Test seasonal repayment
Use actual payment dates against lower work, repairs and late receipts, then record conditions for the decision.
Public tools
Use these without an account. Enter your own measurements and quotes. Save records on this device or export a copy for your job folder.
Fixed-rate payment and total cost
All amounts are your inputs. Enter explicit zeros where appropriate. Leave missing quotes blank; no national range is supplied.
Principal = price − down payment. Monthly rate r = annual nominal rate ÷ 12. Payment = [principal − balloon ÷ (1+r)^payments] × r ÷ [1 − (1+r)^−payments]; at zero rate, (principal − balloon) ÷ payments. Total cash = all monthly payments + down payment + upfront fees + final balloon. Fixed-rate monthly loan model only; a lease needs its actual payment schedule and buyout. Nominal interest is not automatically APR; this does not compute statutory APR.

What documents might a lender request?
The lender may request entity/ownership/identity, equipment/use-of-funds, credit/tax, financial/bank/debt and forecast evidence. Obtain its actual checklist.
Can I finance used equipment?
Check the lender's exact age, condition, inspection, valuation and title rules for that machine.
What do collateral and a personal guarantee mean?
They identify pledged assets and any person's repayment promise under the actual agreement. Get qualified review of the written obligations.
How do I compare offers beyond the monthly payment?
Compare principal, price, rates, fees, upfront cash, schedule, final balloon/buyout, security and default/prepayment terms on the same scope.
Can payments be arranged around a seasonal business?
Only use a seasonal schedule the lender actually offers in writing; include changed fees, timing and final obligations.
